IB Curriculum

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

The IB is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 19, with unique academic rigour and emphasis on student’s personal development. The IB curriculum is available in 5163 schools in over 150 countries, teaching more than one million students worldwide. The IB programs challenge students to excel in their studies and encourage both personal and academic achievement. They focus on each student, addressing not only cognitive development but social, emotional and physical well-being. IB works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners. Students develop into inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people with adaptable skills to tackle society’s complex challenges. Every school authorized to offer IB programmes is known as an IB World School.
KEY International School is an IB candidate school for Primary Years Programme (PYP):

THE IB PROGRAMS

There are 4 IB programs:

Primary Years Programme

The PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child.

Age range: 3-12

Diploma Programme

Research suggests many benefits to choosing the DP. The programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.

Age range: 16-19

Middle Years Programme

A challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, the MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation.

Age range: 11-16

Career-related Programme

The CP is a framework of international education addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. It leads to further/higher education apprenticeships or employment.

Age range: 16-19

IB PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), for children aged 3 – 12, nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The PYP allows students to develop their academic, social and emotional well-being, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. Additionally, it fosters independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.

How the PYP Works:

Students develop knowledge through six transdisciplinary themes, selected for their relevance to the real world:

Who we are

Where we are in place and time

How we express ourselves

How the world works

How we organize ourselves

Sharing the Planet

IB STUDENTS PERFORM BETTER

Students become “inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, and reflective”, therefore being prepared for our complex and interconnected world. The PYP has shown incredible results:

  • • According to a global International School’s Assessment study that ran from 2009-2011, the PYP students outperformed non-IB students in mathematics, reading and writing.
  • • A national study conducted in Australia, in 2014, found that students in the PYP perform better than the national average nationwide in science tests.

EVALUATION

In KEY International School, our purpose is to focus intensely on student learning, by practicing a grading policy that is fair, consistent and meaningful. In our community, we provide students with the means to exhibit their different types of intelligence, whether it be through testing, reports or speaking.
The academic achievement status is communicated to the students and parents twice a year, through comprehensive report cards with descriptive feedback, encouraging continuous reflection and growth. Moreover, students improve their learning abilities and discover more about themselves as explorers. All students are given an equal chance to develop their full potential, excel and become well-rounded individuals.
